  1. The behavior of colloidal particles near fluid interfaces has attracted significant scientific interest, as particles minimize the contact area between the two fluid phases, stabilizing interfacial systems. This study explores the influence of surface roughness on the properties of particle monolayers at the air–water interface, focusing on colloidal silica particles and fumed silica particles of similar hydrodynamic diameter. This research involves comparing low-surface-area (LSA) and medium-surface-area (MSA) fumed silica particles with spherical colloidal silica particles (250 nm in diameter). Utilizing a Langmuir trough, the interfacial particle networks are compressed and expanded. Analysis of surface pressure isotherms reveals that fumed silica particle monolayers form networks at a lower particle surface coverage compared to spherical particles. The spherical particle monolayer exhibits a higher apparent surface elasticity, indicating greater resistance to the applied compression compared to fumed silica networks. Additionally, monolayers formed by fumed silica particles display hysteresis even after successive compressions and expansions due to irreversible particle interlocking and the formation of multilayered aggregates. These findings provide insights into the impact of surface roughness on the behavior of particle monolayers at fluid interfaces, offering valuable information for designing and optimizing mechanisms involved in emulsion and foam stabilization.

  2. Abstract Interfacial rheology studies were conducted to establish a connection between the rheological characteristics of particle-laden interfaces and the stability of Pickering foams. The behavior of foams stabilized with fumed and spherical colloidal silica particles was investigated, focusing on foam properties such as bubble microstructure and liquid content. Compared to a sodium dodecyl sulfate-stabilized foam, Pickering foams exhibited a notable reduction in bubble coarsening. Drop shape tensiometry measurements on particle-coated interfaces indicated that the Gibbs stability criterion was satisfied for both particle types at various surface coverages, supporting the observed arrested bubble coarsening in particle-stabilized foams. However, although the overall foam height was similar for both particle types, foams stabilized with fumed silica particles demonstrated a higher resistance to liquid drainage. This difference was attributed to the higher yield strain of interfacial networks formed by fumed silica particles, as compared to those formed by spherical colloidal particles at similar surface pressures. Our findings highlight that while both particles can generate long-lasting foams, the resulting Pickering foams may exhibit variations in microstructure, liquid content, and resistance to destabilization mechanisms, stemming from the respective interfacial rheological properties in each case.

  3. Although decades of research suggest that higher species richness improves ecosystem functioning and stability, planted forests are predominantly monocultures. To determine whether diversification of plantations would enhance aboveground carbon storage, we systematically reviewed over 11,360 publications, and acquired data from a global network of tree diversity experiments. We compiled a maximum dataset of 79 monoculture to mixed comparisons from 21 sites with all variables needed for a meta-analysis. We assessed aboveground carbon stocks in mixed-species planted forests vs. (a) the average of monocultures, (b) the best monoculture, and (c) commercial species monocultures, and examined potential mechanisms driving differences in carbon stocks between mixtures and monocultures. On average, we found that aboveground carbon stocks in mixed planted forests were 70% higher than the average monoculture, 77% higher than commercial monocultures, and 25% higher than the best performing monocultures, although the latter was not statistically significant. Overyielding was highest in four-species mixtures (richness range 2–6 species), but otherwise none of the potential mechanisms we examined (nitrogen-fixer present vs. absent; native vs. non-native/mixed origin; tree diversity experiment vs. forestry plantation) consistently explained variation in the diversity effects. Our results, predominantly from young stands, thus suggest that diversification could be a very promising solution for increasing the carbon sequestration of planted forests and represent a call to action for more data to increase confidence in these results and elucidate methods to overcome any operational challenges and costs associated with diversification.

    The use of the Janus motif in colloidal particles, i.e., anisotropic surface properties on opposite faces, has gained significant attention in the bottom-up assembly of novel functional structures, design of active nanomotors, biological sensing and imaging, and polymer blend compatibilization. This review is focused on the behavior of Janus particles in interfacial systems, such as particle-stabilized (i.e., Pickering) emulsions and foams, where stabilization is achieved through the binding of particles to fluid interfaces. In many such applications, the interface could be subjected to deformations, producing compression and shear stresses. Besides the physicochemical properties of the particle, their behavior under flow will also impact the performance of the resulting system. This review article provides a synopsis of interfacial stability and rheology in particle-laden interfaces to highlight the role of the Janus motif, and how particle anisotropy affects interfacial mechanics.

    Abstract FlyBase (flybase.org) is an essential online database for researchers using Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism, facilitating access to a diverse array of information that includes genetic, molecular, genomic and reagent resources. Here, we describe the introduction of several new features at FlyBase, including Pathway Reports, paralog information, disease models based on orthology, customizable tables within reports and overview displays (‘ribbons’) of expression and disease data. We also describe a variety of recent important updates, including incorporation of a developmental proteome, upgrades to the GAL4 search tab, additional Experimental Tool Reports, migration to JBrowse for genome browsing and improvements to batch queries/downloads and the Fast-Track Your Paper tool.

  6. Abstract SummarySequencing data resources have increased exponentially in recent years, as has interest in large-scale meta-analyses of integrated next-generation sequencing datasets. However, curation of integrated datasets that match a user’s particular research priorities is currently a time-intensive and imprecise task. MetaSeek is a sequencing data discovery tool that enables users to flexibly search and filter on any metadata field to quickly find the sequencing datasets that meet their needs. MetaSeek automatically scrapes metadata from all publicly available datasets in the Sequence Read Archive, cleans and parses messy, user-provided metadata into a structured, standard-compliant database and predicts missing fields where possible. MetaSeek provides a web-based graphical user interface and interactive visualization dashboard, as well as a programmatic API to rapidly search, filter, visualize, save, share and download matching sequencing metadata. Availability and implementationThe MetaSeek online interface is available at https://www.metaseek.cloud/. The MetaSeek database can also be accessed via API to programmatically search, filter and download all metadata.   7. Abstract FlyBase provides a centralized resource for the genetic and genomic data of Drosophila melanogaster. As FlyBase enters our fourth decade of service to the research community, we reflect on our unique aspects and look forward to our continued collaboration with the larger research and model organism communities. In this study, we emphasize the dedicated reports and tools we have constructed to meet the specialized needs of fly researchers but also to facilitate use by other research communities. We also highlight ways that we support the fly community, including an external resources page, help resources, and multiple avenues by which researchers can interact with FlyBase.

    Abstract The Gene Ontology Consortium (GOC) provides the most comprehensive resource currently available for computable knowledge regarding the functions of genes and gene products. Here, we report the advances of the consortium over the past two years. The new GO-CAM annotation framework was notably improved, and we formalized the model with a computational schema to check and validate the rapidly increasing repository of 2838 GO-CAMs. In addition, we describe the impacts of several collaborations to refine GO and report a 10% increase in the number of GO annotations, a 25% increase in annotated gene products, and over 9,400 new scientific articles annotated. As the project matures, we continue our efforts to review older annotations in light of newer findings, and, to maintain consistency with other ontologies. As a result, 20 000 annotations derived from experimental data were reviewed, corresponding to 2.5% of experimental GO annotations. The website (http://geneontology.org) was redesigned for quick access to documentation, downloads and tools. To maintain an accurate resource and support traceability and reproducibility, we have made available a historical archive covering the past 15 years of GO data with a consistent format and file structure for both the ontology and annotations.
